Basilius Alawad is a Syrian Cellist living in Berlin, he studied at the High Institute of Music in Damascus between 2011 and 2013, where he performed with the Syrian National Symphony Orchestra as a guest cellist and soloist.
Basilius moved to Germany in 2014, where he performed at many festivals in Europe such as ’’Weimar Kunst Fest 2014, Berlinale 2016 at the European premier of (The Music of Strangers: Yo- Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble), Grachtin Festival in Amsterdam, Roskilde Festival in Denmark, Rudolstadt Festival, Morgenland Festival 2018 in Osnabrück’’. He has shared the stage with distinguished figures such as Yo-Yo Ma, at the opening week of the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Naseer Shamma, Kinan Azmeh, in Venues as Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin, Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam.
As a member of the West Eastern Divan Orchestra, Basilius has performed under the Baton of Daniel Barenboim at Venues such as the Royal Albert Hall at the ’’BBC Proms’’ in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, Disney Hall in Los Angeles, Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Chicago Symphony Center, KKL in Luzern, Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg.
Basilius has shared his own compositions at venues as the Berlin Philharmonie, Pierre Boulez Saal, Rudolstadt Fest, Muziekgebouw, and recently won the ‘‘Ettijahat for Independent
Culture‘‘ sponsorship to produce the first album ‘‘Black Cotton‘‘of his composition. Basilius has composed sound track for Arab Youtube Series and short movies, and has lately released his first electronic music single for voice and electronics titled ‘‘Tal Elleil‘‘.
In the mean time, Basilius is studying cello in class of Sennu Laine at the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin where he joins workshops, lectures, chamber music guidance by Daniel Barenboim, Michael Barenboim, Michael Wendeberg.
